UW-Platteville Shooting: Two Female Students Tragically Killed on Campus

On May 19, 2025, a deeply tragic and unexpected event occurred at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, resulting in the deaths of two recently graduated students. Identified as Kelsie Martin, 22, from Beloit, and Hallie Helms, 22, from Baraboo, both women had just celebrated their academic achievements at the commencement ceremony two days prior. The university and surrounding community are in mourning following the shocking event.

The incident happened in or near Wilgus Hall, a student dormitory on campus. Following reports of danger, the university issued a shelter-in-place alert. Although police have not officially confirmed the nature of the event, multiple eyewitness accounts and emergency dispatch audio suggest it was a targeted shooting that occurred around 4 p.m.

While university officials have remained reserved in disclosing information, they confirmed the identity of the victims in an email sent to students and faculty late Sunday night. The message expressed condolences to the families and assured that mental health services would be available to support grieving students and staff.

UW-Platteville is home to over 6,300 students, with nearly half living in campus-owned housing. The university is located in Platteville, Wisconsin, a small city near Dubuque, Iowa, known for its calm and close-knit atmosphere. The tragedy has shaken both the campus and broader community.

As the investigation continues, officials are working to understand the motive and circumstances of the incident. In the meantime, students, faculty, and families are urged to support one another and utilize available resources during this difficult time.
